The Two Hundred Club of Greater Miami, Inc., was founded in 1968 by Ben Benjamin, Ben C. McGahey, Samuel J. Powers, Jr., Ralph Renick and Don Shoemaker. It was patterned after the One Hundred Club of Detroit.

The purpose of The Two Hundred Club is to benefit the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters when such officers or firefighters have lost their lives in the line of duty. The Two Hundred Club functions for the benefit of all law enforcement and fire personnel in the Greater Miami area, including employees of local, state and federal jurisdictions.

The procedure of The Two Hundred Club is to give the spouse of a deceased officer or firefighter a check for $15,000 as soon as appropriate after the death occurs. Additionally, each dependent child receives $2,500. The Club also reviews financial obligations of the family and offers further help when needed.

Some years ago, The Two Hundred Club provided $100,000 for the formation of the Police Officer Assistance Trust (POAT), an organization that meets the needs of law enforcement personnel in times of personal problems. The Two Hundred Club also donated $40,000 for the formation of the "Last Alarm Fund," an organization having the same purpose for firefighters as the POAT has for police officers.

The Club's Board of Directors has recently approved the beginning of a new program, which will provide financial assistance to surviving spouses so they can improve their educational level and be better able to provide for themselves and their families.

Since its inception, The Two Hundred Club has made benefit payments and contributions in excess of $1,000,000.

Membership dues are $300 annually, and I.R.S. exemption has been granted. Two dinner meetings per year - in the spring and fall - are included in the membership dues. The Two Hundred Club does not seek public funds.  It is supported by the dues paid by its members, proceeds from the Club's investments, and occasional bequests.
